The move (back) to touch screens has been somewhat clumsy for Nokia.
Having abandoned them after the ill-fated 7710 and standardised on hardware and d-pad control with its best selling S60 phones and keyboarded communicators, we now find the industry moving back to full-face touch screens.
The cheap and cheerful 5800 XpressMusic has been very successful, introducing us all to the old S60 interface but with touch support tacked on top. It wasn’t elegant, in the same way as the iPhone OS is elegant, but it did work and the extra screen real estate (640 by 360 pixels is the new standard for Nokia) was welcomed in all applications, but especially for mapping and web browsing.
And now we have the N97, with essentially the same core software and interface as the 5800 but with a quality bump all round on the hardware front. Does the bump justify the price (almost twice as much, SIM-free)?

HTC’s devices are many and varied, and all the better for it. After all, what suits one user won’t suit us all. But the HTC Touch Pro2 is, quite simply a stunner, with just one flaw in its otherwise superb armoury.
If you’ve been waiting for the arrival of Samsung’s Omnia HD, then wait no more. It is here, under the new, and rather less exciting name of the i8910HD. That HD part of the naming is the important bit. It refers in part to the fact that this particular handset has a screen with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels. Yes, we know that’s not HD resolution, but it does have 16:9 ratio and for a mobile phone it is really pretty good, its AMOLED technology ensuring it is sharp and bright.
So, you are a Pay As You Go fan, you like the idea of a touchscreened phone, but you don’t want to spend a fortune for it. Orange reckons its Vegas fits the bill nicely. And they are right.
But let’s be very clear at the outset, that if you want a singing, dancing, shouting, multimedia rich, bells and whistles smartphone, you shouldn’t be looking here. This is a £50 phone Pay As You Go, and it shows in every direction.
