Android app reviews: Google Goggles
Google Goggles is an innovative ‘visual search engine’. Instead of typing your search term, just point your camera at an object and let Goggles do the rest.
Coming from the Google stable we have high hopes for Goggles. And while they are currently only partly met, the potential this app has is clear to see. Goggles is a visual search engine.
Rather than typing in a search term, you simply point your camera at an object, take a snap and Goggles tries to identify what it is and return a relevant web search. It works well on branded products like books and CDs, reasonably well on printed text, wherein it can translate from one language to another, and film posters and pieces of art.
It can apparently also recognise landmarks, although our tests suggest this is limited to only landmarks you probably already recognise. We await the day it can identify people with mild terror.
