10 apps you can’t live without
With tens of thousands of apps available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia, it is easy to fill your device with tools for pretty much any function. Some will be used often; others will go completely untouched. But there is also a small group of apps that not only get used the most, but that you instinctively reach for no matter where you. The apps you simply could not live without.
For finding your way around a strange city
cab4me (Android, iPhone)
If you travel a lot, especially on business, then you will be familiar with the feeling of not quite knowing where you are or where you are going. In such cases Cab4me is perfect. A great example of the single use app, it detects your location then shows you on a map all the nearby taxi ranks, as well as a list of local cab companies, who you can call with just a single tap on the screen.
For reading your favourite websites
Google Reader (All platforms)
Okay, so not an app per se, although it feels like one when you’re using it. Load up your favourite websites into www.google.com/reader and it will automatically pull in all the latest updates from those sites whenever you want to read them. Perfectly optimised for touch screen devices, it might just revolutionise the way you use the web.
For accessing your files
Dropbox (All platforms)
Juggling multiple computers can be tough – emailing files between work and home, or filling USB flash drives, then trying to keep track of which has the most up to date version of your documents. Throw a smartphone into the mix and things get even worse. Dropbox is a cloud storage/sync solution that gives you access to your files wherever you are.
Copy files to your Dropbox on one computer and they will be updated anywhere else you have it installed, to be read, edited and shared. There are dedicated Dropbox apps for iPhone and Android, with BlackBerry on its way, as well as a mobile optimised website for other platforms. It’s free as well, for up to 2GB of storage, with pro accounts available for more demanding users.
For keeping up with the news
Thomson Reuters News Pro (All platforms)
News is one of the areas where pretty much all of the app stores excel, with many of the world’s leading news organisations having a presence. BBC and Sky News both have good options for iPhone and Android devices, but our pick is the Reuters app. Its quick bursts of spin-free news are the perfect way to keep up to date with what is happening around the world whenever you need to know.
