magazine has announced the winners of its 2010 Awards, sponsored by Clove. The HTC Desire won the flagship award, being named as Smartphone of the Year, as well as Best Android smartphone, while Apple also picked up two for the iPhone 4. Other winners included BlackBerry and Samsung, and in a reader’s vote Vodafone was named as Best Network.

The magazine presented twelve awards in total. Most were decided by an expert panel of judges including writers from the world of mobile tech as well as representatives from the retail industry. There were also two awards voted on by readers of Smartphone Essentials magazine and its website smartphonedaily.co.uk, as well as one by the customers of leading independent retailer and event sponsors www.clove.co.uk.

The Samsung Galaxy S was the readers’ pick for top smartphone. In two special GPS awards Garmin and ALK won for best device and software respectively.

“So many of the most exciting developments in consumer technology over the last year have been seen on smartphones, and the devices are now no longer the preserve of the gadget fan, but are more accessible than ever,” commented Andy Betts, editor of Smartphone Essentials.

“No device reflects better than the HTC Desire. It was the first Android smartphone to successfully combine cutting edge technology with true mainstream appeal, and was a compelling product as a result.”
