Horror Racing is a top-down racer that evokes fond memories of Micro Machines.

With cute graphics and a typically innovative iPhone interface, it manages to be both fun and challenging in equal measure. With an onscreen steering wheel that must be controlled by rotating your thumb over it to determine the direction of travel and upgrades evenly spread across the screen to be tapped when required, there’s no gas pedal and no brakes – just point, shoot and drive.

And once you’ve got the hang of it, Horror Racing becomes a real blast to play. Featuring 15 levels of increasingly weird opponents, tracks and pick-ups and five playable racers to choose from it freely borrows from other racers yet manages to  find a style al of its own.

The upgrades are fun too, some which can be fired ahead, others drppped behind Mario Kart-style and Power Runes that create radiating flames or electric shocks to take out anyone in range. Upgrades are laid out across the screen and activated by simply tapping them.

With a free Lite version to try, Horror Racing is well worth a look at this or, indeed, any time of year.
