The Snap is HTC’s first smartphone with a front-mounted Qwerty keyboard since the S640 at the end 2006.

“Nobody’s perfect”, says BlackBerry boss

by Andy Betts, posted Thursday 16 April 2009

mikelazaridisLaptop Magazine has published a wide-ranging interview with co-CEO of RIM Mike Lazaridis in which he responds to the negative reception to the BlackBerry Storm. “That’s our first touch product, and you know nobody gets it perfect out the door. You know other companies were having problems with their first releases,” he is quoted as saying, effectively reaffirming co-CEO Jim Balsillie’s earlier statement that buggy hardware was now a fact of life that early adopters in particular would just have to get used to. He does confirm, however, that more touch-based devices are on the way.

He also questions the viability of PC manufacturers such as Acer and Dell moving into the smartphone space. “Well, I can tell you if you’re getting into this for the first time, it’s a fairly expensive undertaking, and it’s a very, very ambitious undertaking. They’re going to have a lot of challenges getting into the market. We’ve got well over a decade of experience in this space. You have to sit down and ask yourself what strengths a new player is bringing to the table. There’s lots of Windows mobile devices in the market already,” he says.
