Free Twitter by SMS comes to O2

Prepare for a glut of tweets from iPhone users: O2 has become the second UK network to announce that it will allow its users to send and receive tweets for free via SMS.

Users will receive tweets from chosen friends, @mentions, and direct messages, and can also send and reply to tweets by text which will come from their bundle or be charged at the standard network rate (10p per message).

The move comes a couple of months after Vodafone made a similar announcement. With phones increasingly being sold on their social networking capabilities, it seems likely that the remaining networks will also need to follow suit soon.
