It hasn’t been the criticism that is most damning for the new Windows Mobile 6.5, but the rather the fact that WinMo licensees will continue to cover up the newly, supposedly finger-friendly UI, with their own custom front-ends, and vastly more functional ones at that. If they don’t have any faith in it, when why should anyone else? We take a look at the best, and worst, of some of the many faces of Windows Mobile.

The most famous example, HTC has done more than any to try and hide the regular WinMo UI beneath something a little more user friendly. With calendar, contacts, weather and web the latest version goes deeper than ever, but support for customisations is minimal.

If you’ve been waiting for the arrival of Samsung’s Omnia HD, then wait no more. It is here, under the new, and rather less exciting name of the i8910HD. That HD part of the naming is the important bit. It refers in part to the fact that this particular handset has a screen with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels. Yes, we know that’s not HD resolution, but it does have 16:9 ratio and for a mobile phone it is really pretty good, its AMOLED technology ensuring it is sharp and bright.

The folders on any S60 device aren’t set in stone. You may already know how to move application icons between folders, but you may also want to rename the folders themselves. For example, ‘Music’ might become ‘Media’, or you might want to have ‘Puzzle games’ plus ‘Action games’. Use ‘Options>Rename’ on the main menu.
