Get started with Word Mobile

The Microsoft Office suite of applications is to be found on millions of desktops around the globe. It features the ubiquitous word-pressing legend Word, spreadsheet saviour Excel and presentation package PowerPoint amongst many others.

This means that Windows Mobile users can sync and swap documents from device to desktop and back making sure that the latest version is always available.

Word Mobile boasts a feature list borrowed from its desktop counterpart with the obvious limitations that come when ported to a mobile device. For example, elements of a desktop document, ie, headers, footers and certain fonts cannot be inserted into a Word Mobile document.

Conversely, elements of a desktop document can be retained when synced to a mobile device. However, the essential elements and a little bit more are all there to make sure that users get a rich, on the move experience. Plus, the software includes a host of tools including find and replace, a spell checker and a word count tool.

Here we look at what Office/Word Mobile has to offer mobile device users and how it interacts with its desktop cousin.

Get started with Word MobileGeneral options
Straight to business and as soon as Word Mobile is called into action users are instant access to a list of Word documents. Before calling a document into action there is the option to create a new document or take a trip through the Menu. With no document open Menu presents a limited selection including Options.

Users get to choose the default template, the Word 2007 format (.docx), older Word formats (.doc) and others such as Memo and Meeting Notes. These are effectively pre-defined documents. There is to the option to select a save location, ie main memory or card and what file types to display on the file list. If you only use Word documents select Word files.

The File list provides its own selection of quick access options. Tap and hold down the stylus on a file name to reveal a host of choices. Select Rename/Move to rename the file in its current location or save to an alternative location. Alternatively, keep the file name and save to an alternative location. This also presents document information including Size and Format.

Delete is available to quickly get rid of a file, while Create Copy adds a copy to the current location. To instantly send a file the Send command opens a SMS/MMS message and automatically attaches the file. To send to another device using Bluetooth Beam File is the command for the job.
