Guide to Google Gears for Mobile
Cloud computing comes to mobile devices. Protect your security by storing data online, and access powerful online apps including office suites. And it can all be available when you are offline too. We take a look at the wonderful new world of Google Gears for Mobile.
Gears-enabled web applications
Google has been developing the Gears software for PC users for some time now, but the mobile version is still in its infancy. Compatible applications are not yet widely available, but Google is striving to make it easier for developers to create Gears-enabled mobile web applications.
Even so, there are a handful of pretty cool applications and services already available.
Take Buxfer and Zoho for example. The first time that you access one of these applications on a Windows Mobile device and then go offline, you will be asked if you want to install Google Gears. Once installed, Gears sits discreetly on your handset and helps you stay in touch with your data, even if you lose your network connection.
Buxfer
Buxfer is a free personal finance web application designed to aid budgeting and expense management. Sporting built-in Gears functionality, Buxfer may just be the ideal solution for those who want to manage their finances while mobile, but do not want to store sensitive data on their handheld.
Create an account, open IE Mobile, type m.buxfer.com in the address bar and you will be able to use Buxfer’s mobile interface to manage your account balances and transactions while online. But here’s the clever bit. If you lose your internet connection, you will still be able to access the application’s features while offline, albeit in read-only mode.
