Email is crucial in any company as it by far the most common way for people to communicate with each other from a variety of locations. It is not only used for pure communication, but for keeping track of what is being said by each party and at times can make the difference between clinching a large deal or missing it entirely.
Two platforms dominate the market, but how do you tell which is the right one for you. We take a look at the pros and cons of BlackBerry and MS Exchange.
Blackberry
The name Blackberry is synonymous with email and now attracts the addictions of millions of suits around the globe.
The platform was built on email and RIM has slowly built many more features into its handsets where it now competes in the wider smartphone arena. RIM offers tailored solutions for all types of business no matter what industry they are in or what size they are. The email solution is often just one part of a tailored solution, but it does give businesses the ability to mobilise their workforce without replacing their current email set up.
The Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) is a software package that integrates with a business’s current email solution and can enable employees to communicate and look up company information such as directories directly from their smartphone, which is usually a Blackberry branded device. The Blackberry solution is extremely quick and will often deliver emails to the mobile device before they reach a desktop email application.
Ironically, one of the major benefits of the Blackberry service is a system called Blackberry Messenger which is in direct competition to mobile email. Users can talk in real time, just like instant messaging, by contacting the PIN number of the receiver’s Blackberry. This service is highly efficient and extremely cost effective, particularly for large businesses.
Pricing is dictated by RIM and the customer, and as such it would be impossible to offer a detailed analysis, but for the self employed and small companies there are solutions available which range from £5 / month on top of standard mobile tariffs.
